Who we are

Two CPAs. One firm.
Built because small businesses deserved better.

We’re Brooks and Caroline — a husband-and-wife team of licensed CPAs who left the corporate accounting world to build the kind of firm we wish had existed for our clients.

Brooks

CPA · KPMG Alumni · Profit First Coach

Brooks's background is in financial reporting — the kind of work that trains you to read a set of books the way a CFO would, not just as a record of what happened but as a signal of where a business is actually headed. His experience includes time at KPMG, where the standard for accuracy and review was set high and stayed there.

After years in corporate accounting, he kept noticing the same pattern: small business owners who couldn't find someone who would both do the work and care about the outcome. The firms taking on 200 to 500 clients had no capacity left for real communication, real advice, or real relationships. Brooks built Smoky Mountain CPAs to be the opposite of that.

He's also a certified Profit First coach — which means he doesn't just keep your books clean, he helps you build a system that makes profit intentional rather than accidental.

Caroline

CPA · Co-Founder · Corporate Accounting

Caroline brings the kind of technical foundation that comes from working at the highest levels of the profession. Her background includes corporate accounting experience at KPMG — where she worked across inventory accounting, financial controls, and the kind of in-the-weeds detail work that most bookkeeping firms simply can’t offer at the staff level.

She handles the technical depth of every client engagement. When something unusual shows up in the books, Caroline’s the one who knows whether it’s an error, a categorization question, or something that needs a conversation with your tax CPA.

Her presence in the firm is what makes the dual-CPA review more than a marketing line — she’s actually doing the review.

Why we started this firm

We kept seeing the same problem. So we decided to fix it.

Every small business owner we talked to had a version of the same story: their bookkeeper was hard to reach, never proactive, and couldn’t tell them much beyond what was already in the numbers. The firms taking on hundreds of clients had no capacity left for the ones who actually needed help.

That’s the gap we built Smoky Mountain CPAs to fill. We chose to stay small on purpose — not as a marketing line, but as an actual operating decision. Our roster is intentionally capped so that every client gets the attention they deserve and every set of books gets reviewed by a licensed CPA before it reaches them.

We chose ecommerce and Shopify specifically because the books are genuinely more complex than most — and that complexity is exactly where business owners get hurt the most. Shopify payouts, multi-channel reconciliation, sales tax across states — we’ve built our entire process around these challenges so they’re never your problem.

How we operate

The things we won’t compromise on.

These aren’t aspirational values on a wall. They’re the specific decisions we made when building this firm — and the things that make us different from most bookkeeping options.

01

Radical transparency

Our prices are public. Our process is documented. We tell you who we’re not a good fit for. We’d rather lose a client than mislead one — and we think that honesty is actually good business.

02

Two CPAs on every engagement

Every set of books is reviewed twice — by staff, then by a licensed CPA. No exceptions. This isn’t a premium add-on. It’s the baseline. You hired CPAs, you should get CPA-reviewed books.

03

Communication that actually works

When you email us, a CPA responds. We don’t route client communication through account managers or assistants. If something is wrong with your books, you hear from the person who found it.

04

Boutique by design

We cap our client roster intentionally. Not because we can’t grow — because we know what happens to quality when a bookkeeping firm takes on everyone who asks. We’d rather be excellent for fewer people.

05

Ecommerce is our specialty

We don’t work with everyone. We work with Shopify and ecommerce stores because that’s where our process is sharpest. A generalist bookkeeper handles your books. We handle the specific complexity of how ecommerce businesses actually work.

06

Month-to-month. Always.

We don’t lock clients into annual contracts. If we’re not delivering value, you should be free to leave. That accountability is what keeps us sharp — and it’s why we’ve never had a client leave because we didn’t do our job.

Two ways in — the diagnostic if you want a full picture first, or a call if you’d rather talk through your situation. Either way, a CPA picks up.
