How much does bookkeeping cost in Knoxville?
Search this and you get national averages from companies that have never seen a Knoxville business. Here is the local version, with real local numbers in it, from a firm that actually works here.
The short answer
For a small business in the Knoxville area, ongoing monthly bookkeeping generally runs somewhere between a few hundred dollars a month at the low end and roughly $2,000 at the upper end of small-business work. Our own plans are quoted after a diagnostic rather than listed on a rate card, and every level includes the business tax return.
The range is wide because bookkeeping is priced on work, not on revenue. Two businesses doing the same sales can cost very different amounts if one runs a single checking account and the other runs four sales channels with inventory.
What actually moves the number
Transaction volume
The single biggest driver. A consultancy with 40 transactions a month and a boutique with 900 are not the same job, whatever their revenue looks like.
Number of accounts
Every bank account, credit card, loan, and payment processor is another thing to reconcile to a statement every month.
Sales channels
One register is simple. Shopify plus a marketplace plus in-person means payouts that have to be split into sales, fees, and refunds before anything is accurate.
Inventory
If you carry stock, cost of goods has to move correctly or every margin on your reports is wrong. This is real work and it prices accordingly.
Payroll and sales tax
Both are separate disciplines with their own deadlines. We price them as add-ons rather than bundling a cost you may not need.
What shape the books are in
If the file is months behind, the first job is a catch-up, priced once as a project rather than folded into the monthly fee.
A benchmark worth holding quotes against
Accountants use a rough sanity check of one to two percent of revenue for ongoing bookkeeping. Take one and two percent of last year's revenue, divide by twelve, and you have a band. It is not a pricing formula, it is a way to notice when a quote is strange in either direction.
Treat anything far below that band as a question rather than a bargain. Cheap books are usually incomplete books, and the correction shows up later at cleanup prices. We wrote about the benchmark in detail in what bookkeeping should cost as a percentage of revenue.
What you should be getting for it
Price is only half the question. At any level worth paying for, every account should be reconciled to its actual bank statement rather than to itself, a licensed CPA should review the work before it reaches you, and you should get financial statements you can act on plus a plain explanation of what changed. If all you receive is a closed month and a P&L, you are buying history.
How we price it
We quote a flat monthly fee after looking at your books rather than publishing a rate card, because the honest answer depends on your transaction volume, whether you carry inventory, and how far behind things are. Foundations includes quarterly strategy meetings. Growth adds monthly meetings and your personal return. Partner adds bi-weekly meetings and priority access. Every level includes clean CPA-reviewed books, the pay-yourself-first cash system, and your business tax return. The pricing page explains how we arrive at your number.

Answers before you ask.
How much does bookkeeping cost in Knoxville?
For a small business, ongoing monthly bookkeeping in the Knoxville area typically runs from a few hundred dollars a month up to around $2,000, depending on complexity rather than revenue. Smoky Mountain CPAs quotes a flat monthly fee after a diagnostic of your actual books, each level including clean CPA-reviewed books, a pay-yourself-first cash system, and the business tax return.
Why do bookkeeping quotes vary so much for the same business?
Because firms scope differently. One quote may be data entry with a closed month at the end. Another may include reconciliation to actual statements, CPA review, financial statements, and tax filing. Ask what is included, who reviews the work, and what happens when an account does not reconcile. Those answers explain most of the spread.
Is bookkeeping priced as a percentage of my sales?
Not directly. Good firms price on the amount of work involved, meaning transaction count, number of accounts, sales channels, and inventory. The one to two percent of revenue figure is a sanity check for owners comparing quotes, not a pricing method.
Do I need a local bookkeeper?
Not for the work itself, which runs fine remotely with secure document sharing and read-only access. Local matters if you want to sit across a table occasionally, and it helps for state and local filing familiarity, Tennessee sales tax in particular. We are Knoxville based and serve clients nationwide.
What does catch-up bookkeeping cost if I am behind?
It is priced as a one-time project rather than folded into the monthly fee, because it depends on how many months need rebuilding and how tangled each one is. We scope it with a flat-fee diagnostic first and then give one fixed quote, so there is no open-ended hourly meter.
